What is Kybella?

Kybella is deoxycholine acid, which is a naturally occurring substance produced by the gallbladder in response to ingested fats. It is what helps to break down the fats in our food. When injected directly in to fatty areas, it does exactly what it is meant to do: it breaks down fat.   When we are first born, we have a certain number of fat cells. We accumulate more fat cells up until around the age of 28 months. After that we never get new fat cells. While those fat cells may grow larger or smaller as we gain or lose weight, the number of cells does not change. This is why liposuction works. Once the fat cell has been removed, it will not be replaced.  Think of Kybella as a non-surgical form of liposuction.

What areas of the body can be treated?

With few exceptions, if you can pinch it, we can treat it. The most common problem areas we treat are:

Double Chin
Jawline
Saggy Upper Arms
Underarm/side boob
Bra Line Back Fat
Inner Thighs
Outer Thighs
Above the Knees
Abdomen

Why choose Kybella over Surgical liposuction?

Surgical liposuction certainly has its place for significant fat reduction, but it also has all of the risks inherent with surgery, anesthesia, and long surgical recovery times.  Kybella is a set of injections, using a very small needle. There are no surgery risks at all.  The most significant side effect that we see is swelling at the site of injections that normally lasts about a week, and there is usually some slight bruising.  Another bonus of Kybella is that because of the naturally occurring inflammatory process that occurs and the slower clearance time, the majority of people with see a noticeable firming of the skin as opposed to liposuction which frequently leaves sagging skin.
